Field Training
(Duration one month):
Student have to carry
out practical field
training on emergency
Response, how to manage
camps of disaster –
affected people, and
practice in voluntary
works.

Complementary Works:
a.
Field Practice in voluntary work (In Camps of the
displaced or refugees).
b.
Dissertation: As Partial Fulfillment for the degree, the
student should write a
dissertation on any one
of the course subjects.
Time allowed for the
diploma dissertation is
3 months where as the
master degree is 9
months.

(a)
The diploma students who score 80 percent and over in the
theoretical course would
automatically be
transferred to the
master degree programe
(b)
The dissertation constitutes 50% of the degree requirements.
5. Short Courses ( with
certificate):
The Institute also
conducts from time to
time short courses on
disaster issues. The
course normally lasts
for 2-6 weeks. Upon
completion the
participants are awarded
certificates.

Major Courses:
1.
Natural Disaster :
The course
aims at
acquainting students
with the kinds of
disasters (natural and
man- made). Natural
like : earthquakes ,
volcanoes ,floods ,
drought, desertification
, environmental
degradation .. etc.
Man- made disaster like
: war, conflicts , land
mines … etc. In
addition students
should study the causes
of disaster ( hazards ,
risk, vulnerability) and
its negative impact
(social, economical,
environmental and
political).
2. Health Disaster
:
To
acquaint the
students with the
concepts of health
disaster (epidemics ,
nutrition ,
environmental health ,
professional health ,
protective health ….
etc). and how to combat
such disasters .
3.
Voluntary Works:
The course introduces
the concept of voluntary
works, the history and
the objective of
voluntary works. The
course also handle
include sessions on the
new trends and
approaches of voluntary
work. Examples of
voluntary work
programmes and obstacles
also be discussed.
The concept and
principles of voluntary
work in Islam are major
issues in the course

Disaster
Management :
The course aims at
acquainting students
with concepts and
definition of
disasters management of
disasters and how to
mitigate its negative
effect. The programme of
study includes: disaster
cycle, preparedness,
prevention, response and
rehabilitation.
Training on risk and
vulnerability analysis
and assessment will
also be conducted. The
course also includes
issues:

use of modern technology
in disaster management,
like: satellite image,
GIS, GPS, in early
warning.

Methodology
This course is meant to equip
students with knowledge
of how to conduct
research. This includes
different filed
surveys and data
collection and analysis
methods. Research
approaches like:
deductive and inductive
approach are also

Part of the course is on
econometrics and
descriptive statistics
to enable students to
carry out analysis and
interpretation of the
data and the result of
the research.

Aid:
It
aims at acquainting and
training students on how
to rescue and salvage
inflicted persons at
the time when disaster
strikes till they are
transferred to the
hospitals.
2.
Home Nursing:
To
train students
practically on
practices of home
nursing in order to
apply that on diseased
persons in the camps of
the displaced and
refugees .
3.
Civil Defense:
This is
mainly on quick
intervention to save
lives and properties,
and make available the
necessary protection
in the case of
emergencies such as:
fire's, explosions,
traffic accidents,
floods …etc.
4. Communications
Skills:
Disaster management (
preparedness, response
and mitigation…etc)
need skillful personnel
for prompt and adequate
communication for
disaster risk avert. The
training is also meant
to encourage all
sections of the society
participate in
mitigating the negative
effects of disaster.
5. Conflict
Resolution:
The
course provide training
on how to carry out
peaceful resolutions of
conflict. Peace building
programme are also
discussed. Inherited and
traditional practices
of conflict resolution
(like community leaders
mediation) are also
discussed.
6.
Time Management:
The
importance of time is
stressed. Time can not
be retrieved. Students
are trained on how to
make rational use of
time and make best
allocution of time
according to priority
7.
International
law and International
Organizations
The
purpose of this course
is to introduce the
International Law –
particularly the
aspects pertaining to
disaster combating, e.g.
legislations that
organize the use of
natural resource and
banning the use and
spreading of harmful
materials and causing
pollution.
The
course also provide
examples of
international
organizations dealing
with disasters.
